When it comes to sovereign debt matters, we offer effective solutions. Kepler-Karst can transform the most complex legal and financial challenges into opportunities.
Our team has acted on all sides of the spectrum, representing sovereign and sub-sovereign debtors, private creditors, multilateral organizations, and regional financial institutions. This provides us with a strong understanding of the multitude of considerations, incentives and likely positions of the different stakeholders involved in any sovereign project or restructuring, which can be leveraged to the advantage of our clients. We have intervened for our clients in facilitating financing options, as well as implementing liability management exercises and restructurings.
We benefit from an industry experienced team that can immediately identify the issues critical to the matter. Our expert lawyers then develop and implement a strategy while maintaining flexibility and being mindful of unintended consequences and the challenges faced in a situation of distress.
Our expertise in complex cross-border matters also spans into solving special situations across the globe. This is evidenced by our proven experience in different continents, which provides us with the specific capacities to successfully implement any project.
The practice is led by London-based Prof. Dr Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal. He developed a broad international expertise, having worked on all five continents while developing a specifically vast experience in Africa, across more than 14 countries on the continent.
He is a world leading expert advising on sovereign debt issues and has acted as Sovereign Debt Expert for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Senior Insolvency Expert for the World Bank / IFC and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as well as a consultant to several multilateral institutions in Washington DC and Europe, Central Banks and Sovereign States, and in several international transactions. He leads Kepler-Karst’s special situations team and the sovereign debt practice.
